AUDIO: Mathieu Darche | Jacques Martin | Jaro Spacek | Glen Metropolit | Scott Gomez

• At a Glance: Mathieu Darche has been a useful player for the Canadiens since being recalled from Hamilton and he continued to show why Tuesday night with a pair of goals in a 5-3 Montreal win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Canadiens jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes on goals by Glen Metropolit and Scott Gomez, who finished the night with three points. Steven Stamkos made it 2-1 early in the second, but Benoit Pouliot quickly restored the two-goal lead and Darche scored the first of his two goals 7:33 into the second, chasing Antero Niittymaki from the Tampa Bay net. Matt Walker made it 4-2 midway through the second when his shot went off Travis Moen’s stick and deflected passed Jaroslav Halak. Darche’s second goal of the game, and his fifth of the season, came 3:26 into the third period, only moments after the end of a Canadiens power play. Martin St. Louis scored with 1:07 to play, but the Lightning could get no closer. Halak made 28 saves for the win, with Montreal going 1-for-2 on the power play while killing off three of four Tampa Bay man advantages. The Canadiens have won four of five games, and three straight, since returning from the Olympic break.

• Key Moments: Montreal killed off a Tampa Bay power play at the end of the second and start of the third before Darche gave the Canadiens a three-goal lead.

• What It Means: The Canadiens improve to 33-29-6 and 72 points, moving them two points ahead of the Boston Bruins, 4-3 losers in overtime to the Maple Leafs.

• What’s Next: The Edmonton Oilers are in town on Thursday and the Bruins visit Saturday to wrap up a short three-game homestand for the Canadiens.

Streaking Habs earn a day off

0halak.jpg

Not-so-fresh off last night’s 5-3 home-ice win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, and having earned six of a possible eight points during a four-game trip that took them from Boston to San Jose to Los Angeles to Anaheim, the Canadiens will take a one-day break today.

This will be the first day off for goaltender Jaroslav Halak since Feb. 8, when the Habs stepped down after back-to-back Super Bowl matinées vs. Pittsburgh and Boston.

Halak, winner of the January/February segment of the Molson Cup as the Canadiens’ player of the month, practised Feb. 9 and was in equipment through Feb. 13, the Habs’ final game before the Olympic break. He then flew to Vancouver, took Slovakia to the bronze-medal game, returned immediately to Boston through Montreal, then went west with his team and returned to earn the victory last night. Safe to assume he didn’t have an alarm set this morning.

The Canadiens skate tomorrow morning ahead of their game tomorrow night at home against Edmonton, the practice again Friday to prepare for Saturday’s Bell Centre date with Boston.

Game 68: Habs/Lightning

If ever there was a time when our team needed to step up – it is now. We’ve seen the Lightning cruise into Montreal too many times before and take 2 points. There is no denying the effect that the city has on Lecavalier, St Louis, and Tanguay. It is as simple as this: Tampa trails us by 5 points in the standings with 3 games in hand. If Montreal is to have a chance at the post season, they not only have to win hockey games, but they have to beat the teams behind them when given the opportunity.

You HAVE to believe that we’ll see a steady dose of Jaro Halak to close out the season. Whether or not Price deserves the bum rap given how terribly the team plays in front of him is irrelevant. Halak gets it done right now – and unless he slips – he has to be the guy.

They’re all big games this season. Go Habs Go!!!
